Writing That Goes Beyond the Story

Explorations of mental health, resilience, and what it means to live with intention through difficulty.

HarperCollins Canada · 2021

So-Called Normal

A Memoir of Family, Depression and Resilience

A raw and honest exploration of mental illness, trauma, and the path toward understanding ourselves and others with greater compassion. Mark Henick shares his journey from a childhood marked by instability and a suicide attempt at 15 to becoming one of Canada's most prominent mental health advocates.

This is not a typical recovery narrative. It's an examination of how we construct meaning from difficulty, how systems fail vulnerable people, and how genuine resilience emerges not from overcoming struggle but from learning to live with complexity.

"An engrossing memoir, written with the flourish generally only found in fiction. This is a beautiful book — where I would normally say that the memoir will be treasured by the author's descendants, in the case of Mark Henick I can confidently say this will also be treasured by the strangers who read it. Highly recommended."

Mark Henick

Mark Henick

It came from a place of questioning the very concept of 'normal.' Growing up, I was always told that what I was experiencing wasn't normal — but I came to realize that struggle, pain, and complexity are, in fact, deeply normal parts of being human. The title is meant to challenge that assumption and invite readers to reconsider what we mean when we use the word.
